Primorsko with children: what to expect and how to save your nerves

The seaside with children is a different kind of holiday. Not a worse one — everything is simply measured in other units: how far the beach is with a pushchair, whether there is something to eat at two in the afternoon, and how noisy it gets after nine in the evening.

Here is what to expect from Primorsko if you are coming as a family.

Short distances are your quiet advantage

Primorsko is a compact resort. You walk from the centre to the beach in minutes, rather than taking a bus or a taxi. That sounds like a small thing until you have to go back for a forgotten hat, or because somebody fell asleep.

With us the beach is about 200 metres away, and the seaside park is directly opposite the hotel — shade, benches, and somewhere a child can run without being held by the hand.

Which beach

For small children, North and Central beach are the most convenient: a gentle slope into the water, lifeguards, toilets, showers and food on the beach itself. South Beach suits older children better, because that is where the water activities are.

Perla is beautiful and quiet, but it is 3 km away and has no facilities — good for half a day, not for a day with a baby.

Meals are half the battle

With children you rarely eat on schedule. That is why the Ultra All Inclusive arrangement helps, not because of the quantity but because of the timing: breakfast from 8 to 10, lunch from 12 to 2, an afternoon snack from 4 to 5 and dinner from 6:30 — which means there is almost always something available, without hunting for a restaurant or waiting for an order.

In the restaurant the buffet is at a height children can reach themselves, and the lobby bar serves hot drinks and juices until 10 pm.

The room matters more than you expect

If your child falls asleep at nine and you don’t, the difference between one room and two is the difference between a holiday and sitting in the dark. Our family rooms are around 50 sq m and consist of two separate rooms — so one half can sleep while the other watches television or sits on the balcony.

The double rooms are around 25 sq m, with a pull-out armchair, and take two adults and one child.

What to pack

• Hats and high-factor sun cream — the southern coast is stronger than it looks in the morning.
• Beach shoes — not for stones, but for hot sand at midday.
• Something for the afternoon — between 1 and 4 pm the beach is unwise, and two hours in the room with a bored child are long.

One day away from the beach

The boat trip up the Ropotamo river takes about 35 minutes and usually works well even with small children — there is plenty to look at and the boat does not rock. Beglik Tash suits children over six or seven, because it involves about a kilometre on foot with little shade.
